== Events == ;May 12 : * – The Chengguan Railway opens in China. The line is in length with 15 stations. China Railways CRH1 trainsets on the line reach a maximum speed of and make the full-trip in 30 minutes. Nearly two-thirds of the line is constructed on 37 viaducts. ;May 23 : * – Train K859 traveling from Shanghai to Guilin derails in a mountainous area in Dongxiang County, within Fuzhou City, Jiangxi, China. According to the Ministry of Railways, the train was derailed by a landslide that had damaged the rails after days of heavy rain and flooding in the region. At least 19 people died, and 71 were injured. A total of at least 53 people were rescued and another 280 were taken from the train. The death toll was expected to rise. Within 12 hours all survivors had been removed as the rescue effort got underway. Suspected Maoist rebels triggered the attack which occurred in the Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express. The train, which runs from Kolkata to Mumbai, had thirteen coaches derailed, five of which were subsequently struck by a freight train coming in the opposite direction.
